One thing Jono’s talked about in the past is how to make Ubuntu more personal. One of the things that suck about the internet is that we’re all behind monitors and keyboards, and it’s hard to remember that there’s a human being on the other end of the line.

Things like Google Hangouts are…

NOTE! We are starting a bit early today at 1300UTC, and also <del>today</del> tomorrow we have Rick Spencer’s Q+A. Rick is the engineering manager for the Ubuntu Platform, so he’s got good working knowledge of Ubuntu as a whole, so bring your hard questions!

My first encounter with the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky was when I read The Metabarons, a comic book series that describes a lineage of superhuman warriors, the titular Metabarons.
At this year’s Game Developers Conference, I gave a 30-minute talk with my friend Andy Hull about Spelunky and how it went from being a freeware PC game to the XBLA project that we’re both working on right now. Overall, I think the talk went quite well (whew)! You can find footage of the talk somewhere on GDC Vault, but unfortunately, you have to be a registered member of something or another to view it, so I provided the slides here, with some extra commentary.

This is Lauren’s new bike that we picked up Monday night!

We really enjoyed riding the Barclay’s bikes in London and wish we could have ridden the bike share scheme in Paris. The bike lanes were so well separated from the road in Paris it just felt so right. Melbourne has a long way to go before our bike share scheme becomes as good as those available in Europe (ditch the helmet laws, build independent bike lanes throughout the CBD).

In the mean time we wanted to pick up some reconditioned vintage bikes so we rely less on our cars for short and medium journeys. Buying old bikes is a great way of keeping them off the scrap heap, and it means we can support local businesses that do the repairs and resales. Mark was a great help when we picked up the bike, and has offered to help me get a vintage men’s road bike going. There’s plenty of businesses out there restoring ladie’s bikes but virtually none restoring men’s.

Luke Beard wrote an insightful post on the front end development of Zerply. One of the little things that stuck out to me was the method of using native iPad and iPhone controls disguised as normal HTML elements. He uses a native element at zero opacity to trigger the native controls on touch. It’s incredibly straightforward when you think about it, but then again the best ideas always are!

Xcode 4 has an awesome feature called implicit dependency finding (in the Edit Schemes sheet). That wreaks havoc, but only at some time.

To allow Omni frameworks — namely, faux iOS frameworks — to build reliably and correctly, add the uninstalled products directory to the user header search paths…

In music, too, graduates of the small liberal arts college in Middletown, Conn.—about two hours from New York—have had unusual critical success that stirred talk of a Connecticut Cosa Nostra. But it’s less surprising to hear that Michael Bay and MGMT attended Wesleyan, since the school is well known for its film and music departments. While computer science has never been among Wesleyan’s specialties, alumni seem to have found an especially prominent place of late among Silicon Alley’s elite.”

- How Wesleyan’s Counter Culture Came To Rule New York’s Tech Scene | Betabeat (via alexleo)

grungebook:

Attention music geeks: here is your longread of the week. On New Years Day in 1953, Hank Williams, the man who invented modern country music, died of an overdose in the backseat of his Cadillac at age 29. A few days later, his mama searched his house and made a secret discovery that—60 years later, with a little help from Bob Dylan, Jack White, Merle Haggard, Norah Jones, and Lucinda Williams—would allow old Hank’s ghost to rise from the grave. Here’s our favorite bit of musical historicana from GQ contributor Andrew Romano’s wise, affectionate piece—one that not only tells the strange story of these long lost notebooks but also tries to unlock the mystery of Hank’s magical songwriting along the way.

A few hours later, as reporters were conducting interviews, cops were gathering evidence, and family, friends, and lawyers were flooding in from across the South, the crew at N&W Motors in Oak Hill began cleaning out Hank’s Cadillac. Picking through a pile of empty beer cans, a worker spotted a crumpled piece of paper on the floor of the back seat. It was stained by a boot print and most likely scrawled on the drive:

We met, and lived
And dear we loved
Then came that fatal day
The love that felt so dear fades fast away
Tonight we both are all alone
And here’s all that I can say
I love you still and always will
But that’s the price we have to pay

Carr knew that Williams’s mother, Lilly, could be a handful. But even he was shocked by her first response when he called with the tragic news: “Don’t let anything happen to that car!” Then she hung up the phone. Within hours, Lilly was scrambling around Oak Hill, snatching up Hank’s possessions, including the lyric from the Cadillac. She knew it wouldn’t be the last one she’d find. Williams had been scribbling in notebooks with his little pencil stubs for as long as Lilly could remember, and he was always returning home with a billfold of half-completed songs and abandoned ideas under his arm. Her goal was to keep these nuggets of gold out of the hands of her despised daughter-in-law, who wasn’t scheduled to arrive in West Virginia until the following day.

Lilly didn’t discover any other treasures in Oak Hill. But Montgomery was more bountiful. On the morning of Hank’s funeral, Lilly waited until Billie Jean slipped into the bathroom to apply her makeup, then crept into her son’s quarters and started to snoop around. There, stuffed inside a shoebox—or a beat-up leather briefcase, depending on whose memory you trust—Lilly found what she’d been looking for: four bent, schoolboyish notebooks filled with handwritten lyrics.

Mitt Romney, Herman Cain, and other assorted cast members from The Expendables face off tonight at a casino in Las Vegas in a debate sponsored by the Western Republican Leadership Conference. Which maybe means candidates will be discussing “western” issues like guns, cacti, and the Breaking Bad finale? Whatever the topics covered, GQ editors Lauren Bans and Sean Fennessey will be live-blogging everyone’s disastrous pizza jokes. Join us here at 8pm.

Our latest exclusive Q+A is with Jimmy Cliff on the rocksteady legend’s recent collaboration with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, history with The Clash (more on that below), and iconic role in 1972’s The Harder They Come. Tomorrow, get ready for PJ Harvey.

GQ: How did you hook with Strummer in the first place?

Jimmy Cliff: I and the Clash used to cross each other’s path when we did concerts in Europe. We never had time to like, stop and talk, but we’d just say, “Hey Joe!” “Hey, Jimmy. What’s up, what’s going on?” “All right. See you.” It was always more or less like that. Like a respectful artistic nod to each other, you know. So when he came into the studio while I was doing the Black Magic album—it had two titles, Fantastic Plastic and Black Magic—I thought he just came in to greet me. We sat down talking a little about music, and he came out with these lyrics and said, I hear you singing these. He showed them to the producer who said, Well how does the melody go? And he said, I don’t have any melody! I just have these lyrics and I hear Jimmy singing them. So we three of us sat down and put the melody together. It was really a great track.

Giant Fork Stabs a Car

French homegoods retailer IDM commissioned local street theater company Royal de Luxe to design a giant fork stabbing an automobile outside of their Nantes, France showroom. According to the sign shown in the video, the short-term piece is named AMUSE GUEULE which roughly translates in English to “tidbit” or “appetizer” and was used to announce the introduction of IDM’s new Bulthaup kitchen line.
